Police Helicopter Crashes Into Glasgow (UK) Pub Roof - Watch Video

A police helicopter has crashed into a pub roof on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow.

The aircraft struck The Clutha in Stockwell Street which was packed with drinkers at the time.
One image of the crash on social media sites showed the dark blue helicopter on the roof with yellow "Police" insignia on part of the wreckage.
Emergency services were unable to confirm if there were any injuries, but there are reports that people may be trapped in the venue, where a local band were playing on Friday evening.
The Police Roll of Honour Trust tweeted "Our thoughts are with the crew of @policescotland SP99 helicopter that has crashed in Glasgow - hoping everyone is alright."
Labour's international development spokesman Jim Murphy, who was among those helping the wounded out of the pub, tweeted: "Terrible here in Glasgow Helicopter crashed into roof of pub".
He told Sky News: "I just saw dozens and dozens of people coming out of the pub. It is a horrible, horrible scene.

"The helicopter is currently embedded in the roof of the pub and the emergency services are doing their very, very best to get the people who are still inside the pub, and probably those who were in the helicopter, to safety."
Mr Murphy said people formed a human chain to help pass unconscious people out of the pub so that "inch by inch, we could get the people out".
He said: "I think the building's only about 18ft, 20ft, tall so part of the helicopter is sticking out, but most of the helicopter is in the building."
Wesley Shearer, who posted pictures on Twitter of the scene, said there had been "talk of fatalities", but this has not been confirmed.
"This is unbelievable," he tweeted shortly after the crash. "Just spent 20 minutes pulling people out of the bar."
Jan Hollands, who also tweeted pictures from the scene, said she heard the crash and described it as "scary".
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said there were 15 fire engines at the scene along with specialist services.
Gordon Smart, editor of the Sun's Scottish edition, told Sky News: "I was in a car park and looked up and saw a helicopter which I think was a police helicopter.
"It was just such a surreal moment. It looked like it was dropping from a great height at a great speed. I'm about 80% sure that it was a police helicopter.
"There was no fireball and I did not hear an explosion. It fell like a stone. The engine seemed to be spluttering."
Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: "My thoughts are with everyone affected by the helicopter crash in Glasgow - and the emergency services working tonight."
First Minister Alex Salmond said: "The emergency services are in full operation. Our thoughts are with everyone involved. Scottish resilience operation now mobilised."

Gen Raheel Sharif assumes Pakistan Army’s command

RAWALPINDI: Outgoing Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani handed over the command of Pakistan Army to the new army chief General Raheel Sharif on Friday (today). In this connection, a change of command ceremony was held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Friday morning.

General Kayani was presented with the farewell Guard of Honor and later he handed over the command stick to General Raheel Sharif.

Thereafter, the new Army chief, General Raheel Sharif was also given Guard of Honor.

Kayani, known as the ‘quiet general of Pakistani politics,’ has been given much credit for resisting the temptation to meddle in politics despite Pakistan’s frequent security, economic, power and political crises.
Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf had appointed Kayani the army chief in 2007 and received an unprecedented three-year extension from premier Yusuf Raza Gilani in 2010. During his six years tenure, he came across formidable challenges.
Newly appointed Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Rashad Mahmood, Chiefs of Air Staff and Chief of Naval Staff among senior in-service and retired officers of trio armed forces attended the change of command ceremony.

Besides, Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif and a large number of politicians and journalists also witnessed the impressive change of command ceremony.
Profile: General Raheel Sharif

Born in Quetta on June 16, 1956 to Major and Mrs. Muhammad Sharif, newly-appointed army chief Raheel Sharif grew up steeped in the military tradition.

Sharif’s elder brother, Shabbir Sharif, was a course-mate of General (rtd) Pervez Musharraf, and was killed during the 1971 war with India and was awarded the Nishan-i-Haider, Pakistan's highest military award.

He attained his formal education at Government College Lahore and later went on to attend the Pakistan Military Academy.

After graduation, he was commissioned in 1976 in the battle hardened and renowned 6th battalion The Frontier Force Regiment in which his elder brother was also commissioned.

As a young officer, he performed his duties in Gilgit in an infantry brigade and also served as adjutant of Pakistan Military Academy.

As a brigadier, he has commanded two infantry brigades including an independent infantry brigade group.

He has been the General Of?cer Commanding of an infantry division and the Commandant of the prestigious Pakistan Military Academy.

As a Lieutenant General, Sharif served as Corps Commander for two years before taking over as Inspector General Training and Evaluation in which capacity he oversaw the training of Pakistan Army.

He was also awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the second highest civilian award an honour that is given to both civilians and military officers of the Pakistan armed forces.

On Nov 27, the government approved Raheel’s appointment for the slot of Chief of Army Staff, a position that he took over from Ashfaq Parvez Kayani who stepped down on Nov 29 after serving as military chief for six years.

The general is married with two sons and a daughter.

Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd ODI Highlights 2013 Pakistan Won By 1 Run

PORT ELIZABETH: Pakistan recorded a sensational one-run victory and also a maiden series win against South Africa in the second One-day International here at the St George’s Park on Wednesday.

South Africa who were going well on the way to victory and needed only eleven runs from twelve balls to level the series were astonishingly restricted by left-arm pace bowler Junaid Khan and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal who gave away just nine runs dismissing two experienced batsmen – Hashim Amla and Jean-Paul Duminy - to snatch the win from the jaws of defeat.

Doctor Injects 6-Year-Old Girl with HIV to Fight Cancer

Doctors cure six-year-old's terminal cancer by injecting her with HIV

PIONEERING doctors have successfully treated a terminally ill six-year-old’s cancer by injecting her with HIV.

The new procedure helped Emma Whitehead despite her being in the last stages of leukemia.
And amazingly she celebrated 18 months free from cancer on november 10 this year.
It was a long shot but doctors at the University of Pennsylvania were amazed at how little Emma improved.
Dr Stephen Grupp said in a Focus Forward interview: “This is a child who had her leukemia come back twice. The parents were looking for a miracle.”

The doctors trained her immune system to recognize and kill tumour cells. She was then infected with the HIV virus to help target the unhealthy cells.
The engineered virus cannot spread disease but retains the ability to reprogramme other cells. Each infused “serial killer cells” can kill 1000 different tumour cells.
Dr Grupp continued: The reality is that dramatic responses of cancer to new treatments are very unusual. We need to make it clear when we talk to the family that it may not work.”
When Emma was injected with the virus she became very sick, struggling with her breathing and blood pressure.
But a few days later, the doctors saw a sudden improvement in her condition and her fever lifted.
Dr Carl June said: “It was like the calm after the storm. The clouds went away and she woke up and there was no leukemia. It was, of course, an amazing event.”
She and her family now travel to Washngton DC in an attempt to urge legislators to fund the pioneerng research.

CIA chief accused of murder over Hangu drone attack

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the political party of former cricketer Imran Khan Wednesday named the CIA’s director and a man it said was the agency’s chief in Pakistan as murder suspects over a drone strike.

Tehreek-e-Insaaf party has written to police over last week's attack on a seminary in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The letter signed by PTI information secretary Shireen Mazari asked Hangu police to name CIA director John Brennan and a man they identified as the agency’s Islamabad station chief as suspects for murder and "waging war against Pakistan".

It is rare for CIA operatives to be identified in public.

PTI, which leads the coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has long campaigned against the CIA’s drone campaign in Pakistan.

Obama Asks Iran for 'Safe Return' of Former FBI Agent

Obama Asks Iran for 'Safe Return' of Former FBI Agent

As the ink dries on the new Iranian nuclear deal, President Obama moved today to push the Middle Eastern nation to help return former FBI agent Robert Levinson, who disappeared in Iran's Kish Island in 2007.
"Today, Mr. Levinson becomes one of the longest held Americans in history," said a White House statement. "As we approach the upcoming holiday season, we reiterate the commitment of the United States Government to locate Mr. Levinson and bring him home safely to his family, friends, and loved ones. We welcome the assistance of our international partners in this investigation, and we respectfully ask the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to assist us in securing Mr. Levinson's health, welfare, and safe return."
Levinson disappeared in March 2007 after he traveled to Kish Island off Iran's southern coast. The 65-year-old is a retired 28 year veteran of the FBI and DEA who was in the country as a private investigator.
FBI Director James Comey said Monday that despite working the case for the better half of a decade, the Bureau's "exhaustive efforts have not yet been successful in locating Bob or establishing a dialogue with those who are holding him."
Still, a family friend told ABC News today that the family sees renewed hope for Levinson's safe return, given the warming relationship between Washington, D.C. and Tehran, most recently signaled in Sunday's temporary nuclear deal.
In January Levinson's family released a series of images showing him draped in chains and dressed in what appears to be a mock prison uniform. In each image, he holds up a sign, one of which says "Help me."
Authorities do not know or have not publicly identified Levinson's suspected captors, but the U.S. government has repeatedly asked the Iranian government's help in finding him. The Associated Press reported in January that American intelligence officials suspected the Iranian government, specifically its intelligence services, was behind the production of the images released by the Levinson family as well as a "proof of life" video.

FULL COVERAGE: Robert Levinson

Today marks Levinson's 2,455th day in captivity, passing the 2,454 days Terry Anderson spent in captivity after being kidnapped by Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Beirut in the 1980s.
Iran is also holding Amir Hekmati, a young Iranian-American who was arrested in Iran in 2011 as he was visiting his grandmothers. Iran claimed the former Marine was a spy and sentenced him to death before overturning that sentence.

Showbiz News : Pakistan Film 'Waar' on it's way to global cinemas

After resounding box office performance in Pakistan, film-makers now planning global release starting with UAE

Pakistani film 'Waar' has tasted success like no other film in Pakistan.

The film that was made in a budget of approx. $ 1 million, has reached almost $ 2 million dollars at the box office till date.

The commercial success of the movie in Pakistan has built huge expectations among movie lovers in overseas as well.

Now after conquering home ground, 'Waar' is on its way for a global release. Speaking exclusively to Emirates 24|7 debutant director Bilal Lashari says a plan is being laid out for its international release.

Bilal said, "We are still talking to distributors and we are trying to finalise the release dates because we want to release it simultaneously in many countries that's why it's taking bit of time.

"All our focus was on releasing it in Pakistan initially and now we are working on the international release. Within a week or two weeks it should be decided when is the international release date."

Sources within ARY films told Emirates 24|7 that 'Waar' might be released in the second week of December but the director is treading cautiously.

He said, "It's possible but again it's not confirmed so I don't want to give away dates until it's confirmed. We are still discussing and as soon as I find out the final date I can let you know."

In the UAE, fans have been eagerly waiting for the theatre release and the director is also looking forward to bring his film to the Pakistani expatriates here.

During our telephonic conversation the young director was excited and said, "We are looking forward, in fact can't wait to, honestly. Now more than ever because we get all these messages everyday inquiring about its release, especially the UAE and in Dubai there seems to be a big market there."

Though the film is bi-lingual (English and Urdu) it has done fairly well in all provinces in Pakistan.

Bilal said, "Not just the urban market we were targeting all of Pakistan, (though) the language is bi-lingual but that's also due to the flavor and international distribution as well.

"But at the end of the day it's a very visual film so the language is really secondary. It's a kind of film that even if you mute the dialogues you can understand because it's a visually driven film.

"The film has got incredible response; the movie is on its way to be the highest grossing film ever in Pakistan. We've almost reached that point, in fact in recent times no film has done as much business.

“Lot of cinema halls in the interiors of Pakistan has been renovated because this film got them that much business so it exceeded everyone's expectations. Not just in the main cities but in the smaller cities as well."

After Waar’s resounding performance it is touted that the film will revive Pakistan's dwindling movie industry.

Bilal thinks to revive an industry it has to be a collective effort. "The only thing this film can do is initiate, influence and motivate this collective effort. This movie is going to boast investor's confidence in terms of believing that there is a potential big market for Pakistani films.

"Lot of cinemas have made money from this film, so their standards are going up, it has encouraged others and everyone is thinking it as a viable option.

"Not every movie is going to succeed but the important thing is that at least we will have a lot of films in production."

'Waar' revolves around the theme of terrorism in the country and has been filmed with the support of the all-powerful military, police departments and government organisations.

In bits and pieces the movie depicts the volatile aspect of Pakistan's rocky relationship with its arch-rival India.
The narrative is simple and packed with action.
Indian villains team up with Islamist militants to plot spectacular attacks across Pakistan. Pakistani security forces jump in and save the day.
"Like any other action film, we wanted to show the triumph of good over evil," said director Bilal Lashari, 31. "And we wanted to do it with a great amount of spectacle and scale."

Politics aside, 'Waar' is fun to watch. Helicopter gunships whizz over mountains and commandos lay siege to militant sanctuaries in Pakistan's picturesque, lawless tribal regions.

World News : Pakistani man kills wife, sons, then himself in upstate New York: Police

Police: Dutchess County Father Killed Wife, Sons In Murder-Suicide

Police in Dutchess County announced Friday evening that a body found beside a road was that of the woman whose husband and two sons were found shot dead Thursday.
A man checking an empty home which had been up for sale spotted the body around 3 p.m. on Route 376 in the town of Wappingers Falls, Trooper Melissa McMorris said. The location is about 13 miles south of where her family was found in Pleasant Valley.

As CBS 2’s Tony Aiello reported, the discovery ended an intense search and dashed any hope that 43-year-old Sarwat Lodhi somehow might have survived the massacre of her family.
“It’s a murder-suicide in which the father, Abbas Lodhi, apparently shot and killed his two boys and his wife,” New York State Police Capt. John Ryan said.
Evidence found in Sarwat Lodhi’s car parked at their townhouse indicated she was grievously wounded, police said. Her sons attended school on Wednesday. Police believe their father, 49-year-old Abbas Lodhi, killed 13-year-old son, Mugthba, at their home in Pleasant Valley and then killed 9-year-old Zain at a shopping center, where Abbas Lodhi then took his own life.
The father and son were found dead in a car parked at a supermarket in Pleasant Valley around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Capt. Ryan said.
The man who discovered the bodies said he was “just dumbfounded.”
“I saw a dead person in the vehicle,” the man, who did not want to be identified, told CBS 2′s Kathryn Brown.
Ryan said a shotgun believed to have been used in the killing was found with the car.
After those bodies were discovered, police went to the family home nearby and found the other boy shot dead.
One acquaintance said he can’t believe Abbas Lodhi could kill his family.
“He never complained. He didn’t seem like he had a crisis in his life. He seemed like he was pretty well happy-go-lucky,” Mark DeLucca said.
Police called the deaths a “family tragedy.” Ryan said the motive was unclear.
“I think it’s one of the most or more tragic things I have seen,” Ryan said. “I find myself having two young boys that — it’s emotional seeing what has happened to these kids. I couldn’t even put into words how tragic it is for all of us.”
Lenore Biscardi, who works next door to the Hyde Park pharmacy that was owned by Abbas Lodhi, said the father abruptly closed the store three weeks ago.
“I think he said it was like three months ago that his dad died and that’s when he just gave up,” Biscardi said. ”He didn’t care about the business, he just gave up. That was his exact words.”

Originally from Pakistan, the Lodhis had lived in Pleasant Valley for just two months. The crime had neighbors in their former Goshen community stunned.
“That’s what’s sad. I have no idea how it unfolded or what happened,” former neighbor John Blaine told CBS 2′s Tracee Carrasco.
Those who knew the victims were struggling to understand how this could happen.
“Zain was a good kid. He was a big kid that always had a smile on his face. He was kind of quiet but he was a peacemaker. He was always the one that never wanted anyone to fight,” neighbor Michael Piccione said.
“The wife was very outspoken, very pleasant, smiled all the time,” Biscardi said. ”It wasn’t a family that you would think anything was off. That’s what’s pretty shocking about the whole thing.”
“It’s sad, really sad. The story about his children affects me more. They were so young. It’s just really devastating,” neighboring business owner Angelina Siragusa said.
Grief counselors were at the boys’ schools, West Road Intermediate School and LaGrange Middle School, on Friday.
“Our hearts grieve for these children and their family,” Arlington Central School District Superintendent Brendan Lyons said in a statement. ”I know that the entire Arlington community joins me in mourning the loss of these young lives.”

Car Insurance : How to get the cheapest car insurance: Ten tips for cheaper car cover

How to get the cheapest car insurance: Ten tips for cheaper car cover

One in three consumers pays over the odds for car insurance, according to the RAC, and new EU rules are likely to make that worse as they are set to send young women's premiums soaring having banned insurers from pricing on gender.
The major crime most drivers commit against their personal finances is failing to shop around for the best premium and simply accepting your insurer's renewal quote, which is likely to be much higher.
Younger drivers can also grab themselves potentially much cheaper car insurance by opting for one of the new blackbox policies, these put a spy in your car to monitor your driving and reward those who are careful and don't drive at dangerous times.
Laura Keely, right, opted to have a little black box put in under the dashboard of her Vauxhall Corsa by Insurethebox. In 2011,she paid £1,800 for a comprehensive policy. Twelve months on, her premiums have dropped to just £1,000 — a 44 per cent fall.
Whether you are male or female, old or young, follow our ten steps to lower premiums.

1. Shop around for the best deals

Savings of hundreds of pounds can be found if you shop around when you renew your cover.
Be careful though. When shopping around for car insurance, it's important to make sure that you are comparing like-for-like cover. Some policies may seem cheaper, but you may find you don't have the same level of cover when you have to make a claim.
Use an online comparison service to do the hard work for you. Put in your details and check the prices that come up. You can alter the excess that you are willing to pay and the mileage you will drive and get new quotes. Also check the insurers that don't feature in comparison sites, the big two are Direct Line and Aviva.
M&S cardholders looking for car insurance cover could clock up 1,000 points by taking out a new policy (renewals don't count). You also get European and legal coverage.
For the environmentally-conscious, The Green Car Insurance deal not only plants trees on your behalf, but throws 90 days free travel insurance and an 18 per cent discount on your car cover into the deal.
Churchill offers a 24-hour legal advice line, an uninsured drivers promise and a five year servicing deal. Experienced, safe drivers could also get an 80 per cent discount for cover of eight years or more.
Temp Car insurance could be a good option if you are after cover for a short period of time and Privilege gives a 10 per cent discount on its multi-car cover. Provisional Marmalade have a decent offering exclusively structured for young drivers.

2. Don't put everyone on your policy

Ensure that only regular drivers are named on the policy. You can always add someone for a few days when they really need to drive the car.

3. Protect that no-claims bonus

A long no-claims bonus is the single best way of cutting car insurance costs, so protect it. This may increase the premium by a few pounds, but this fades into insignificance against the potential loss of a 90% discount on a premium of several hundred pounds.
But the definition of a protected no-claims bonus can vary widely between insurers. Though accidents caused by another driver will normally have no impact on such a bonus, those caused by the insured could. The key is to always check the policy carefully.

4. Take a higher excess

Increase your voluntary excess. Agreeing to pay more towards the cost of any accident repairs will bring down premiums. If you are not at fault in an accident, the excess can be recovered.Beware being tempted to allow it to rise too high, however, especially if you have a lower value car.

5. Secure your car

Fitting an approved alarm, immobiliser or tracking device can attract a discount of around 5%. Many newer cars will come with these as standard, so make sure you check if you have them and then declare them.

6. Do less miles

The fewer miles the car covers, the greater the saving. For example, a reduction in annual mileage of 5,000 miles could save a typical 35-year-old female driver about £50 a year in premiums. A cut of 10,000 miles a year could save more than £100.
But you must be honest about your annual mileage, as inaccuracy will jeopardise any claim. Check your use cover - if you don't use your car to drive to work or for business - both things that increase your premium - you may be able to get a cheaper rate.

7. Think carefully about adding young drivers

Adding a young, inexperienced driver to your policy can be a false economy, especially if you have a large or higher powered vehicle. The premium will still be affected by the youngest driver and he or she may not have a no-claims bonus. Insurers have also been cracking down on fronting, where parents insure cars in their name for children to cut costs, so make sure if you are the policyholder on a car driven by your children that you are actually its main driver, or that you declare otherwise.

8. Watch out for insurance trap cars

If you decide to change your car, check with your insurer if the model will have a significant effect on the premium. Sporty cars can attract a high premium and often a slightly different model or smaller engine can make a big difference in your favour. It will also probably save you on petrol too!

9. Remember what the garage is for

If your garage is full of junk, clear it out and use it for your car. Insurers like cars kept in garages overnight and this can dramatically cut your premium. Aside from the benefit of not having to scrape the ice off in winter, there is a higher risk of theft by keeping the car on the road, so keeping it in the garage will be reflected in your premium.

10. Be a better driver and sign up to a blackbox

Blackbox policies, where the insurer instals a system in your car to monitor your driving, reward those who drive carefully. Officially called telematics, these check your speed, your handling and how cautiously you drive, and also whether you are on the road at perceived dangerous times - ie the early hours of the morning.
They can cut premiums substantially once you start proving you are a good driver. The biggest win is for those whose premiums are high, especially young drivers.
